A welcome return to Milverton of this world famous Russian string quartet who have played for us on two previous occasions to great acclaim. This time their programme included Arensky, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky
Cellist Jamie Walton appeared at Milverton for the first time in our 2010/11 season, with his long-term duo partner, pianist Daniel Grimwood. Jamie is now well known internationally as a rising star of the cello, with solo, chamber and concerto performances across the world; he plays a 1712 Guarneri. Daniel has a well established career as a soloist and chamber muscian, with a special interest in authentic performance. They played works by Beethoven, Thuille, Saint-Saens and Chopin.
‘One of the more remarkable and admirable aspects of Walton’s playing is his deep and penetrating musical maturity’ International Record Review 2009
Malcolm Martineau, described by the New York Observer as ‘One of the world’s finest accompanists’ with friends Lorna Anderson (Soprano) and Pete Evans (Tenor), and with fellow pianist Elizabeth Hayley, celebrated the versatility of the piano, the importance of the accompanist and the fun that can be had around a piano with music and songs from the 19th century through the jazz age to the present day.
This concert was sponsored for the Piano Fund.
‘Figgy Pudding’ is Opus Anglicanum’s celebrated Christmas concert of tradiotional carols, songs, French baroque noels, music hall and stories. A rich variety of both unusual and well-known music, together with poems and narratives from Hardy, Dickens, Herrick and others make up a splendid Christmas entertainment, which concluded with a set of haunting arrangements of folk carols by Vaughan Williams.
Following his long association with Milverton Concert Society, and his continuing encouragement to the Society, Melvyn Tan generously offered to give this concert as his contribution to the Society’s new piano.
