Melvyn Tan first played in Milverton in 1988 and returned three times: in 1990, 1994 and 2002. His 5th visit coincides with his 50th birthday and our 20th anniversary. A celebration indeed.
After moving to the UK from Singapore in 1978, he studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the Royal College of Music. He rapidly built a formidable international reputation for piano performances and his exclusive contract with EMI Classics produced a series of groundbreaking recordings. His recitals and recordings are too numerous to cover and they continue to receive great critical acclaim. The first half of the programme on the 8th December alternated works by Albéniz (a Spaniard born in 1860, the same year as Mahler) with works by Scarlatti (an Italian born in 1685, the same year as Bach). After the interval, Melvyn played Schubert¹s Sonata in G major.
