The Atrium Quartet
This young quartet from St Petersburg Conservatoire rose to international prominence in April 2003 when they won First Prize and the Audience Prize in the London International String Quartet Competition. They had previously come second in the 6th International Competition for performances of string quartets by Shostakovich, held in Moscow. Anyone who was lucky enough to hear them in one of our concerts in Fitzhead in 2004 can vouch that that award was justified. We are therefore delighted to announce their return with another Shostakovich quartet balanced by quartets by Schumann and Schubert.

Melvyn Tan
Melvyn Tan first played in Milverton in 1988 and returned three times: in 1990, 1994 and 2002. His 5th visit coincides with his 50th birthday and our 20th anniversary. A celebration indeed.
After moving to the UK from Singapore in 1978, he studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and at the Royal College of Music. He rapidly built a formidable international reputation for piano performances and his exclusive contract with EMI Classics produced a series of groundbreaking recordings. His recitals and recordings are too numerous to cover and they continue to receive great critical acclaim. The first half of the programme on the 8th December will be alternating works by Albéniz (a Spaniard born in 1860, the same year as Mahler) with works by Scarlatti (an Italian born in 1685, the same year as Bach). After the interval, Melvyn Tan will play Schubert¹s Sonata in G major.

The Emerald Ensemble
The Emerald Ensemble is Bristol's professional chamber orchestra, and is renowned for its accessible, passionate, warm and virtuosic performances. The group holds a pivotal position in South West music, presenting eighty events per year in the region's major venues - including the 2005 Bristol High Sheriff's Gala Concert, and the Wells High Sheriff Gala for the past three years. Formed in 1994 by Roger Huckle, Emerald is a musicians' collective, bringing together the best of the region's performers. Roger is a violinist well known to Milverton audiences most recently as one half of Duo del Fuego.
The programme they will play is in reference to yet another celebration: the 150th Anniversary of Elgar¹s birth. The pieces will range from his piano quintet to Salut d¹Amor.

The Rose Consort of Viols · Trickling Tears and Ruthless Rage
"The Rose Consort combines an entrancing ear for line and texture with great beauty of sound and suppleness of phrase, transporting us at once back to an era which gave a premium to grace, refinement, and civilised discourse", said CD Review. The programme we have chosen for the consort to perform is a series of dramatic songs from Elizabethan plays interspersed with dances and fantasias from Byrd, Tomkins and their contemporaries. For this they are joined by Katherine King, Mezzo-Soprano.
