About the Society

In 1987, two local, energetic enthusiasts with great vision, decided that it was time to bring professional live music to Milverton. A group of like-minded volunteers was formed and a series of concerts staged by candlelight in the Parish Church. Audiences started at around 65 people but soon reached 150 when Melvyn Tan first came in 1988.

In 2000 Rosie Shaw and Gill Lumby went to London to receive an award from Chris Smith (Culture Secretary) for bringing music to school and community with the help of business sponsorship. Rosie left the society when she moved from the area in 2003 but Gill still makes sure the Church is as beautiful as possible and the concerts continue to be supported by many members of the community. Since 1987, 97 concerts have been given and 71 workshops. These have ranged from classical quartets to puppet shows.

The concert society was formed in 1987 and this year is our 22nd season of concerts. The society is run by an enthusiastic group of volunteers but the concerts could not survive without the tremendous support of our audiences.

We hope this year’s programme will excite you all and prove to be as successful as in the last two decades.

The Milverton Concert Society at Milverton School

Over the last 20 years we have tried, wherever possible, to ask the musicians to give a workshop at Milverton Primary School. The opportunity for the children to see and hear top class classical musicians is a core component of the programme.

This year both the Dominant Quartet and the pianist Wu Qian have agreed to give workshops between 2.00 and 3.00 on the afternoons of the concerts. Parents and friends are invited to attend for a contribution of £1.50.
